Tim Sanders gave glow approval of Oprah Winfrey's decision to cancel a show about the Columbine School massacre. Oprah said that the show, which would mark the tenth anniversary of the shootings, "focused too much on the killers."
Sanders, a bestselling author and former Yahoo! executive, wrote on his blog, Sanders Says, that the media monolith made the right decision. "Oprah gets it," he wrote. "Shes my media hero. I wish cable [networks] and NBC were as responsible.
"Heres my point of view: Its irresponsible to turn killers into rock stars. By giving them airtime, we breed more killers. This is the conclusion of various media studies in Europe and explains why many media outlets there will not name a killer/terrorist. Remember, many hate crimes or sprees are motivated by the need to be heard or the need to be famous. I find much of today's coverage highly inflammatory with only one goal in mind: ratings at any cost."
Tim Sanders' latest book, Saving The World At Work, speaks to a similar sense of corporate responsibility for which he praised Oprah. For information on how to bring Sanders to your next event, visit www.premierespeakers.com/tim_sanders.
