Rani Hong is an entrepreneur and a leading voice in the fight against modern slavery. She is a survivor of child trafficking, a former special advisor to the United Nations, and founder of the recently launched Freedom Seal Global, a social enterprise company.
Rani began her advocacy work to end modern slavery more than 23 years ago. Since then, she has been at the forefront of an international effort to eradicate the use of slave labor, helping organizations around the world understand their exposure to modern slavery and the money laundering risks associated with trafficking in humans.
In 2011, Rani was appointed as a special advisor to the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. She was instrumental in the creation of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 and in 2013, Rani helped establish the first-ever World Day Against Trafficking in Persons – now an annual event held on July 30th.
In 2018, Rani became a member of the Global Coalition to Fight Financial Crime. Formed as a public-private coalition, its aim is to enhance the fight against financial crime globally.
Rani founded the Freedom Seal Global in 2019. Its flagship compliance software platform has a unique certification program which is a marker of trust awarded to entities and individuals committed to ending forced labor. The Freedom Seal Due Diligence Program certification is the world’s first visual marker for companies that are actively taking steps to prevent forced labor and human trafficking.
Rani is a sought-after and popular speaker. Most recently, Rani has shared her knowledge and expertise with several financial institutions. She discussed the typologies of human trafficking and red flags with more than 100 members of the South African Anti-Money Laundering Integrated Task Force (SAMLIT). And in December 2021, Rani spoke to Standard Chartered Bank’s global employees about the link between money laundering and modern slavery.
Rani has received several awards and is often featured in the media. She has received India’s Women of the Year (2018), Jefferson Award for Public Service (2010), and the United Nation’s Human Rights Award (2008). Her many broadcast and media interviews include The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, BBC and Euro News.
Rani lives in Olympia, Washington USA with her husband and children.
