Magic is all around us — at least, that's what the magicians on Syfy's upcoming reality competition show, Wizard Wars, will show viewers.
On the show, skilled illusionists are challenged to create mind-blowing tricks out of household objects — from a water gun to Spam. (Assuming you keep Spam in the cupboard.)
The goal, says creator and producer Rick Lax, was to take the world of illusions and open it up to people who may consider it out of their realm — much like Syfy's Face Off, which is currently in Season 7. "When I started watching Face Off on Syfy, I didn't know about special effects makeup, and I didn't care about it. But that all changed," says Lax. "I grew to appreciate the ins and outs of this weird art form."
When it comes to magic, "most people only see the end result," he says, but by showing some the behind-the-scenes creation, he hopes "they'll walk away with a deeper appreciation of what we do. ... Plus, so many magicians are even funnier and weirder offstage than on."
On the show, premiering Tuesday at 10 p.m., two teams are challenged to create illusions from common objects and those routines are then judged by a panel of vets — including Penn & Teller, magic critic Christen Gerhart and illusionist Jason Latimer — in creativity, showmanship and deception. The winning team then vies for ultimate victory against a home team of "wizards," which includes Youtube fave Justin Flom, who has been part of the project with Lax since the beginning.
Above, Flom and Lax give a taste of how high the bar is set for the magicians on the show, in a video filmed exclusively for Mashable, featuring 13 magic tricks in two minutes.
