NBC’s Meredith Vieira interviews Elizabeth Smart for a one hour special airing this Friday, October 4.
Smart was 14 in 2002, when a kidnapper snatched her from her Salt Lake City bedroom. She would be held for the next 9 months. For the first time, Smart will reveal the details of life with her captors.
Despite having a year-long contributor arrangement with ABC News, Smart never talked about her captivity. When the ABC deal was announced, a spokesperson told us Smart’s appearances would be, “very much focused on looking ahead, not looking back on her own story.” Smart’s deal with ABC ended in July 2012. NBC tells us this is a one-time interview with Smart, not part of a larger contributor deal.
The interview is timed to the release of Smart’s book “My Story,” which is out next Tuesday.
The special airs Friday night at 10pmET and on Monday, Smart will be in the “Today” show studio.
