AC Green's enthusiasm and playfulness were wonderful tools to put our students at ease before he started his abstinence message. Hhearing a professional athlete speak about his personal commitment to abstinence really seemed to impact the students.
NBA Career:
A.C. Green has played in more consecutive games than anyone in the history of the NBA: 1,192 games. A.C. played through many aches and pains over the course of his 16-year career that included three Championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers. His two favorite milestones are being the only Laker player to have won Championships in both the Great Western Forum and the Staples Center and introducing the A.C. Bear to the world. Little A.C.'s rookie season began December 25, 1999 when 19,000 fans received the bear as a present at the Christmas Day game against the San Antonio Spurs. A.C. played in five NBA Finals and had successful seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, the Phoenix Suns, and the Miami Heat.
A.C. Green was the Lakers' first round selection in the 1985 college draft, 23rd selection overall out of Oregon State. He became the first rookie since LeRoy Ellis in the 1962-63 season to appear in every game. He moved into the starting lineup in 1986-87 for the final 72 games and led the club in rebounds averaging 7.6 per game. He was selected by NBA coaches to the league's All Defensive second team in 1988-89. He scored a career high 35 points on January 15, 1994. The fans voted A.C. as a starter for the 1990 NBA All-Star game.
College:
A.C.'s college career highlights include Third Team All American in his senior year, #4 in Field Goal accuracy in the NCAA as a junior, 1984 Pac-10 Player of the Year and three NCAA Tournaments including Oregon State's appearance in the Elite Eight in 1982.
A.C. Green Youth Foundation:
A.C.'s heart is dedicated to working with youth. A.C. established the A.C. Green Youth Foundation in 1989 with the main focus on character development. Through his "Game Plan" character development curriculum, A.C.'s mission is to help young people build self-esteem and character (i.e. value of abstinence), and learn moral and ethical principles that will help them make responsible decisions.
Business:
A.C. is currently a principle in several businesses including Cross Street Distribution, a music distribution company, and Bond, Aust & Green Capital, an investment-banking firm. A.C. has also owned several Denny's restaurants, a Hyundai dealership, Malachi Mattress, a youth apparel line FU-GEN and MKO Man, as well as being involved in the development and marketing of a sports drink - Biosport. A.C. Green stayed involved with professional basketball as President of The Southern California Surf.
Personal:
A.C. graduated from Oregon State in 1985 with a degree in Speech Communication. The initials A.C., like his father's, do not stand for full names - his name is simply A.C. Green Jr.
A.C. Green is a role model for youth across America and for this he was recognized in the House of Representatives' Congressional Record of October 26, 1999. A.C. was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in September 2001 and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in August 2003.
