At 72, Valerie Ramsey is not only a sought after fashion model, she is also a warrior. After raising six children, Ramsey was not ready to kick back in her 50s but rather ready to start a career and she was willing to start at the bottom of the ladder in order to pursue a dream. “I wanted to do something that was glamorous and fun,” she said. “and I had my eye on the public relations department at the fabulous Pebble Beach Golf Resort in California.” So, she accepted a job working sales in the pro-shop with “all of the college kids,” and went to the local junior college to take a computer course.
Eventually, she would become the Public Relations Director and work their elaborate events for fifteen years. During that time was when her natural beauty and height were noticed and she was signed as a model. While her life does sound glamorous and fun, she was not without her battles. In the past twenty years, Ramsey has fought uterine cancer, heart disease, and currently a difficult virus. But, she is a warrior and these events are not going to keep her down. Her book, co-written with daughter Heather Hummel, is an inspiring read for women of all ages and titled Gracefully Looking and Being Your Best at Any Age.
It’s for all ages because those critical child-raising years are when a women should plan for her future after the children are grown. “ I knew the day was going to come that they would go on and I wanted to be ready for it,” Ramsey said recently on the phone from her Palm Beach home. “ I would journal about it and visualize it. I also knew that I had to be in good physical and mental shape. So, I never let myself go and I always dressed up even if running errands.” Ramsey’s overall message to women as she nears her seventy-third birthday is to “ love yourself enough to take care of yourself.” She is not about anti-aging, but about healthy aging, and gives advice for doing just that. Many Baby Boomer women are excelling and currently living at their highest levels.
