Mike McAvoy is President and CEO of Onion, Inc. and Executive Vice President of Sales for Fusion Media Group (FMG), a division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI)
As President and CEO of Onion, Inc., McAvoy is responsible for the strategy and day-to-day operations of The Onion; its sister publication, The A.V. Club; and internet parody site, ClickHole.
In 2012, McAvoy spearheaded the creation of The Onion's in-house creative services department, Onion Labs. Bringing together the best comedy writers and marketing talent to create advertising content worthy of the Onion name, Onion Labs has already produced native advertising programs and executed various creative projects for brands including HP, 7-Eleven, Adobe, Clorox, Home Depot, Microsoft, Lenovo, and YouTube.
In 2015, McAvoy initiated the launch of Onion Studios, a dynamic digital video network featuring the best programming from Onion, Inc.'s iconic properties, as well as original series produced by the company's world-renowned creative staff.
McAvoy's leadership was instrumental in the negotiations that ultimately garnered Univision Communications Inc.'s (UCI) investment in Onion, Inc. in 2016. In December 2016, McAvoy became Executive Vice President of Sales for Fusion Media Group (FMG), a division of UCI, which includes cable networks FUSION TV and El Rey Network, as well as a collection of leading digital properties: Gizmodo, Deadspin, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Kotaku, Jalopnik, Fusion, The Root, The Onion, The A.V. Club, and ClickHole.
McAvoy joined Onion, Inc. in 2005 as Controller, later becoming Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. He was promoted to CEO in July 2015. Before joining Onion, Inc., McAvoy worked in banking and online education.
