"The scope of your vision should exceed the size of your challenge!" – #Futurist Jim Carroll
A photo that captures me in a moment in time during my keynote for the World Government Summit in Dubai .
The context? Believe it or not, but there are some areas of the world that still have a functioning government! One with leaders who believe that it is a valuable goal to rise a nation out of poverty, to provide an infrastructure of clean water and healthcare, and educational opportunities for the disadvantaged. One in which children are protected and given opportunity, and where infrastructure to take the country into the 21st century is actually built.
Then there is the developed world. Not LOL.
The World Government Summit is an initiative that seeks to challenge those in the government worldwide to think about how to solve of the large and intractable challenges of our time. The scope of the challenge has become bigger in this era in which people seek easy solutions to big problems.
The quote captures the essence of the message I delivered on stage, as I walked through the trends that would provide for both opportunity and challenges going forward.
Throughout the world, there are many people who believe that societies can accomplish great things with sustained effort. There is an understanding that progress comes about through big visions and stretch goals – rather than angry tweets which cause others to rightly question your mental state.
How does your personal vision scale up against the size of the challenges that you are faced with? Are you prepared to step up to the plate and put the effort in to achieve what you might possibly accomplish?
Or is the size your dream so small that you just go through the motions each and every day, doing what you did the day before, without making much progress on anything? Are you stuck in a personal rut, unable and unwilling to try to actually achieve things?
It's Monday – maybe you should retake an inventory of your challenges, and rethink your visions as to how you might accomplish what needs to be done!
