Understanding what to do is a key to your success.
Are you rolling your eyes or making a face because that statement seems like it was written by Captain Obvious? I get it.
But, did you know that statement has a sibling? It's a little less intuitive, but I believe it's equally, if not more important.
Understanding what NOT to do is a key to your success.
Here's the reason this is so important: the more you accomplish in your life - whether it's related to your job, your business, your hobbies, your passions, or anything in between - the more people will ask of you. And if you're not careful, you'll look up one day and realize you're having trouble being as effective as you once were because you've been doing things you shouldn't have been doing.
I'm not talking about things that are morally questionable or unethical, I'm talking about tasks and assignments that are outside the scope of what you should be doing based on your responsibilities, goals, and dreams.
I'm not the first person to write about this idea. Michael Hyatt has written abouthaving a "Not To Do" List before. Jon Acuff has written about the power of saying "No"to things that will derail you from finishing well as you make progress on your goals. (Both of those posts are great and I encourage you to read as well.)
So as you think about what you're going to do today to make it a successful day, don't neglect thinking about what you're NOT going to do as well. Take time to create a "Not To Do" List, or at the very least commit 5-10 minutes to identifying the tasks you can get pulled into that you shouldn't.
Understanding what NOT to do is just as important as understanding what to do. Give equal time to both, and you'll be setting yourself up for success.
