It is Well With My Phone
5 digital habits for a more balanced life

So many people find themselves mindlessly scrolling through social media or working endlessly. Technology is supposed to make us more efficient, giving us more precious time to spend on what’s really important to us. Yet technology use easily creeps into every spare moment of our lives.

Based on her book, Calm, Cool, and Connected: 5 Digital Habits for a More Balanced Life, Arlene will share how you can build five new habits to declutter screen time and find more time for relationships, deep work, and renewal:

H = Hold Down the Off Button (turn off technology at regular intervals)

A = Always Put People First (pivot away from your phone when you’re in person with others)

B = Brush Daily (keep your reputation strong by not posting rashly, stop doom scrolling)

I = I Will Go Online with Purpose (stop wasting time and increase productivity instead)

T = Take a Hike (harness the power of nature to rejuvenate)

Help those in your family or team tame their technology use and become less distracted.

Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World

The average child spends more than seven hours a day looking at a phone, tablet, computer, or TV. What is all this screen time doing to a child’s brain and emotional development? The same technology that promised to improve our lives has a sharp downside. If parents aren’t careful, children can easily slip into habits of being with technology instead of people, resulting in emotional deficiencies that will carry into adulthood.

Using principles from her book Screen Kids (co-authored with Dr. Gary Chapman), Arlene will explain the 5 A+ relational skills that are needed:

Affection - Can your child give and receive love?

Appreciation - Is your child grateful or entitled?

Apology - Can your child admit wrongdoing and repair relationships?

Anger Management - Can your child express anger properly?

Attention - Can your child take a wandering mind and focus?

This talk about emotional intelligence can be adapted for parents or educators.  It can also be adapted to teach the child or teen these A+ skills, motivating and equipping them to have close relationships as they grow up.

Grandparenting Screen Kids

As your grandkids (and adult kids) get more and more immersed in technology, the gap between you and them can start feeling wider than ever.  It can feel impossible to keep your grandchild’s attention without a screen present.

In this talk, you will learn why technology is so addictive, and how the digital world affects the brain and soul of your grandchild.  Arlene will teach several practical things you can do and say to connect to your grandchild’s heart.  Life can be more than video games, YouTube, and social media for kids and teens–and grandparents can be a big part of pulling kids away from constant device use.

Based on her book co-authored with Dr. Gary Chapman, Grandparenting Screen Kids, Arlene will address hot topics like:

-The war over video games

-When you don’t agree with your adult children

-When you’re too tired to compete with screens

-How to pass faith to your grandkids in this current culture

Dangers of Digital Candy

Digital candy–things like social media, movies, and video games–is being gobbled up at increasing rates across all age groups.  What is all this entertaining digital candy doing to our brains, health, relationships, work ethic, and character formation?

Just like we can’t eat chips and soda all day every day without physical consequences, there are consequences for spending hours a day consuming digital candy, especially for kids.

Arlene explains the difference between digital candy and digital vegetables (and how you can help your kids eat more veggies).  You’ll find out why digital candy is so addictive and what you can do to curb those cravings.  Learn to see the signs of the out-of-control digital diet.  The sooner you can intervene and fight for health, the easier it is to reverse the effects of too much digital candy.

Parents Rising - Raising Kids Who Honor Others and Value What’s Right

Wouldn’t it be nice to ditch your parenting doubts, stop second-guessing your decisions, and quit comparing yourself to another family's highlight reel?

Parents are more stressed and worried than in previous generations.  Smartphones replace human interaction, families are fighting, and children aren't maturing as quickly as they used to. How can you reverse these trends in your home and live with more happiness? Training and development doesn't just happen at work. It can happen at home.

Based on her book Parents Rising, Arlene teaches parents that:

-Amusement is not the highest priority

-Parents call the shots

-Routine and boundaries provide security

You'll learn how to launch adults, and not baby children. Raising good kids in today's world can be daunting, but it’s certainly not impossible. Everyday is an opportunity to shape your child’s future, and Arlene will share how to start rising up as a parent today.

I Still Do - How to Have a Dream Marriage That Lasts

Couples struggle with money, communication, intimacy, time management, and many other issues. Arlene will help couples dream together again, setting goals for the future in business and life while practicing these five DREAM principles:

D = Domestic tranquility (create a home that is a haven from the pressures of life)

R = Respect (you must respect one another)

E = Eros (like the Greek god of love, we must continue romance)

A = Attraction (we can continue to act in becoming ways towards each other)

M = Mutual activities (couples need to have fun together)

Based on more than 24 years of marriage, Arlene shares how couples can keep showing up for each other to love, decade after decade.  A perfect talk for marriage events like conferences or entertaining date nights.

Making Marriage Easier

Marriage is losing popularity.  Overall U.S. birth rates continue to fall and many in Gen Z don’t see marriage as necessary or desirable. Yet studies show that married people are significantly happier, healthier, and wealthier than their single counterparts.

How can we make marriage easier so more couples will stay together, not just because they have to but because they want to?  How can we make marriage more attractive to young people today?

If this presentation is for married couples, Arlene will explain four key decisions that will help any couple find an easier path in marriage.  Those decisions are:

  1. We will create rules.
  2. We will choose contentment.
  3. We will serve one another.
  4. We will have fun.

If this presentation is for students, Arlene will give a case for marriage through funny stories of her courtship, social science, and Scripture.

Training Relational Employees in a Screen-Driven World

Are you frustrated by employees who arrive late, forget details, or spend more time scrolling social media feeds than chatting with customers? Technology continues to advance and become more sophisticated. Solid people skills, on the other hand, are declining.

What if you could create a culture of customer service that was both excellent and memorable?

Many young people entering the workforce do not possess strong people skills. They need to be taught how to master relational tasks such as listening, eye contact, empathy, and conflict resolution.

Based on her book Screen Kids, these five A+ skills will help you build a winning team:

- Affection - Does your team member know how to appropriately care for customers and other employees?

- Appreciation - Is your team member operating out of gratitude or ingratitude?

- Apology - When a mistake has been made, can your team member apologize and work to make it right?

- Anger Management - When frustrated by a difficult customer, can your team member act calmly?

- Attention - Can your team members focus on completing tasks and avoid digital daily distractions?

Learn how to model, teach, and implement these skills in your company.

The Happiness Habit

Is happiness largely the product of good things happening to us? In this talk, Arlene shows how happiness can actually be constructed, regardless of circumstance. There are actual habits that lead to living a happy life. Arlene unpacks five habits of the happy person:

H = Hope

A = Adaptability

P = Positivity

P = Purposeful

Y = Yielded

Through scientific research and personal stories, you'll find out how these habits will create more happiness in your organization, social connections, and home life.  It turns out happiness is more about choices than circumstances–and that’s good news.
