The recent implementation of the Affordable Care Act has toppled the status quo in a system that, until recently, has not required rapid change to endure. The impact of healthcare reform begs the question of what lies ahead for the healthcare industry. How will these changes impact the Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Hospital, and other healthcare industries? This whitepaper will frame the future of healthcare in three waves, address the impact that preventable chronic illness will have on the system as a whole, and tell you what you need to know to keep your organization alive.

For the last five years there has been an extremely engaging, emotional debate about who is responsible for paying for healthcare. This question was answered with the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which proclaimed that everyone has a right to healthcare.

The greatest challenge with universal healthcare comes from the debate of payment, which is complicated by the chronic problem of rampant neglect in regards to personal health by the American population.
“According to the latest statistics from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 97 million Americans are overweight or obese. Excess weight is often accompanied by high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and other health problems. The total costs attributable to obesity-related disease approach $100 billion annually in the United States.”
Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1998
Since 1998, the annual U.S. healthcare budget has jumped to $2.6 trillion and 75% of this budget is spent on preventable chronic illness (MD Revolution, 3) . The leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Cleary, we do not have a healthcare problem in the United States. We have a health crisis. And it is this health crisis that is driving the cost of healthcare.
American Heart Association, 2013
Wave two will consist of aggressive and turbulent discussions on how we will pay for healthcare, in particular, the high utilizers — those who continually neglect their health and rely on healthcare to continue their self- injury.
Trying to distribute the cost for the high utilizers in various ways will have an impact that results in massive change. To find who will pay for it, people will be shoved into programs that aren’t acceptable for their personal needs. This will result in an increase in the desire to move towards concierge health. And the exact opposite of the intentions of the Affordable Healthcare Act will happen.
Ultimately this will result in patient experience deciding which companies and organizations survive. The ones who create patient contact-points with layered and dynamic values throughout the patient experience will survive the changes. Healthcare will transition into a consumer product and patients will have far bigger impacts on the success of those who deliver care. Wave two will be marked by unprecedented levels of new innovations in the form of delivery models, efficiencies and value validation. The bottom line those who inno- vate will thrive and those who don’t will go out of business.

Wave Three (2016 +) – How Do We Stop Paying for Healthcare?

After three years of accelerated change and disruption, everyone will come to the same conclusion—it just can't be done. There just isn't enough economic wherewithal and growth within our economy to afford the health crisis driving healthcare costs.
“Total healthcare spending in the United States is expected to reach $4.8 trillion in 2021, up from $2.6 trillion in 2010 and $75 billion in 1970. To put it in context, this means that healthcare spending will account for nearly 20 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), or one-fifth of the U.S. economy, by 2021.”
The Facts About Rising Healthcare Cost, Aetna
Because we will be unable to afford the health crisis, people will be forced to make lifestyle changes. To make this happen, the government will implement Health Value Scores (HVS) to amend the self-inflicted injury of obesity. Think of HVS as car insurance or credit ratings — if you're a bad driver you have to pay higher rates for coverage, if you have poor credit scores the same punishment follows. The healthcare system will be patient punitive for gratuitous healthcare users.
One of the trends that will be most impactful in the healthcare industries will be the consumerization of healthcare, something that is already occurring. Major national retailers will be the ones delivering healthcare instead of the organizations that do so today. And it’s already happening — Rite Aid, Costco and Walgreens all currently provide flu shots. And down the road they will provide much more, such as surgeries. Because these major retailers are already experts at delivering consumer value, if current healthcare organizations don’t change, and change fast, they will be run out of business. Influencing and hyper-influencing communities will drive this change towards consumerization. This means that wave three will be a time of opportunity for organizations that know how to deliver affordable, quality healthcare products and innovation if they know how to utilize the four forces driving this rapid change.

Market Disruption
Understanding trajectory planning will be more important than ever before. This includes perfecting the aggregation of insights and data into actionable plans. Without these skills and a firm understanding of the disruptive ecosystem, extinction will be imminent.
Patient 2.0
Patients are being provided more information about how they should approach a symptom or disease and much of it is occurring outside the healthcare system in influencing and hyper-influencing communities. For example, Facebook allows many patients to share their experiences with doctors with people they know and trust as a way to make decisions about their treatment. An example of a hyper-influencing community is patientslikeme.com. It’s a community that speaks to the fact that patients are collaborating to take doctors and insurance companies out of their discussion. Learning to provide exceptional patient experiences and leverage these communities will keep you in business.
Enterprise 2.0
Hospitals are leveraging internal networks to solve the problems of a disruptive ecosystem. Internal collabora- tive networks are used to gain better patient insights and solutions. Learning to use and leverage new tech- nology is the start to solving the problems this disruptive ecosystem has forged.
Technology
Technology will present a universal solution to reducing costs in the healthcare sector. The innovations in technology will also fuel the rapid change to a patient and consumer empowered system. So learning to leverage low-cost tech and keeping up with the changes will ensure your organizations provide the same solutions that the competition rolls out.
