Talking to kids about death

How do we have death discussions with children? What should we be telling children about death?
In western societies we are very reluctant to talk to children about death. Often this is because we don't know what to say, how much detail to give or what children need to know. We think that we are protecting them by not discussing death, greif and loss, however the more mystery we create around death, the more children's fears are reinforced.

Molly will talk about how to initiate death discussions with children, who should have these discussions and will give practical strategies for dealing with difficult questions.

"We need to protect our children by educating them and encouraging them to discuss their fears and concerns" Molly Carlile

Living with Loss

We all experience significant losses in our lifetimes. Loss of relationships, loss of a job, loss of a home, loss of health, loss of physical ability, ageing and loss of someone significant due to a death.

How we experience our loss is unique as is the grief that accompanies each and every loss.

This speech will explore the aspects of grief and loss that impact each person differently. How long should someone grieve? What influences how someone grieves? What can we do to support grieving people? How can we provide a "compassionate workplace" that acknowledges employee suffering and provides support structures to assist the person to continue functioning in the face of a significant loss?

Depression can be the end of a career................or the beginning

"Having worked for most of my career with terminally ill people and their families, I was impatient and dismissive of people who were "depressed". I figured my patients had every right to be depressed, but rarely were and I couldn't understand why people who weren't faced with the same stresses couldn't just "get on with it". I thought depression was "self indulgent"........until one day......it happened to me"
Molly Carlile takes the audience on personal and intimate journey exploring her experience with debilitating depression. Molly tells of the accident that rendered her immobile for months and resulted in her experiencing reactionary depression that saw her curled up on the couch unable to move, agrophobic and prone to panic attacks. Molly talks about the realisation that changed her life and enabled her to eventually return to a career that seven years on sees her as a senior consultant, published author and sought after speaker. Molly shares her personal story and stories of the people she has supported in their last days and hours of life, to insipire us all to make the most of every day just in case it's the last.

When someone you love is dying

We all think we're immortal, but as we grow older people we love will die. How prepared are we for death? Have we discussed death in our family and work communities? When someone close to us has died were we supported? Chances are we would answer "no" to these questions.

This presentation explores death is a tabboo subject in western countries. It looks at how we can support people facing a significant death and why we need to embrace death in order to truely embrace life.

The compassionate workplace

People experiencing grief and loss are often poorly supported in their workplace, because colleagues don't know what to say......so they don't say anything and the grieving person feels totally isolated.

This presentation explores how we can build a workplace culture that acknowledges the influence of our outside lives on work performance. How by building a compassionate workplace we build sustainability and resilience in our workforce.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence

The days of the autocratic leader are over. As organisations compete for skilled and empowered workers, it is the organisations who invest in their leaders that will have the "pick of the crop".

This presentation explores the concept of Emotional and Spiritual Intelligence theory. It outlines ways of investing in leadership development in order to benefit emerging leaders and the organisations for which they work.
