"Yesterday's success story is already out of date. You need to rewrite it with a new beginning and a different ending!" – #Futurist Jim Carroll

What a great line! I heard this one from someone in a meeting the other day where we were talking about pathways to succeed in a far more complex world.

Your story is never ending: each and every day you have the opportunity to write a new chapter, figure out different plot lines, introduce new characters, and tell a different story. It's all up to you, really. It's yours!

And with that being a reality, a key issue in your story is how you define your success.

Is it based on past glories and old wins when everyone else is playing an entirely different game?

Do you rely on out-of-date ideas to try to define the scope of your next win?

Does your world-beating strategy from yesterday still work in today's fast, more complex world?

Does your #1 rated product still have the same sales potential in a world in which your competitors have decided to sell something completely different?

You can't rest on the belief that what the winning formula from yesterday is a guarantee for tomorrow. You need to come up with a new concoction.

On stage, when I'm addressing the issues that hold back an organization with innovative thinking, I'll often speak to the issue of complacency – a belief system that nothing will ever change, that we are never at risk, and that our future is guaranteed. In today's day and age, nothing could be further from the truth!

And a lot of complacencies are driven by a line of thinking that it's our previous success which will define our future. That is the taproot of all potential failures, and it's a mindset that you should probably avoid at all costs!
