It is with great pleasure that I recommend Amanda Griscom Little as a person and a public speaker. Ms. Little spent two days on the Bowdoin College campus in the fall of 2007 as part of the college’s Cassidy lecture series. During that visit, she met with Bowdoin students and faculty in a number of different venues, including visiting classes in the English and Environmental Studies departments and spending time with student groups such as the Evergreens, a very energetic environmental activist group. The highlight of her visit was an extremely well-attended public lecture, “Green 2.0,” on emerging trends in the environmental movement. The lecture was compelling and informative, and it “brought the news,” as she talked about people like Van Jones, for example, who were not widely known at that time, but who have since become important and noted players in the environmental movement.
What struck me even more than her considerable gifts as a speaker was Ms. Little’s unflagging generosity to everyone she encountered during her stay, whether during her “star” moments of answering questions onstage in the Q and A period that followed her presentation, or during passing quiet interactions with students and others. We have a number of speakers and visitors at Bowdoin each year, and it was widely felt that her time here was one of the year’s highlights.
As her career continues to blossom, I am sure that she will only have more to offer as a speaker and visitor to college and other communities. I give her my highest recommendation, without hesitation or hedge.
