I want to share with you the story behind our contact with Katie Harman, as it is really a very special one to us at Project GRACE. Our organization's Founder, Dr. Lofty Basta, is a renowned author and now retired cardiologist, who rarely watched television before his retirement from practicing full-time at the end of 2002. It was a rare occasion when he happened to be watching the 2002 Miss America pageant. The words Katie spoke during her interview practically jumped out of the television at Dr. Basta. As you know, her platform was breast cancer awareness, and she has a strong interest in medical ethics and quality health care, particularly to patients facing illness and the end of life.
Dr. Basta felt as though Katie were speaking directly to him, her words were so powerful and completely in accord with the mission and vision of Project GRACE. He instantly thought, "I have to have this person speak at our annual Celebration of Life fundraiser!" Dr. Basta was extremely impressed with Katie's insight and message, as were the judges - she earned the crown of 2002 Miss America.
We did in fact subsequently contact Katie, who agreed to speak at our 2002 Celebration of Life event. The message that Katie shared with our guests in support of the importance of quality of life for patients in their final chapter of life was heartfelt and compassionate. Katie is an amazingly talented vocalist who exudes a warm, caring and energetic personality. She captivates her audience with her intelligence, grace, eloquence and charm. Katie's presence is moving with her obvious passion for life and genuine nature. Katie touched the hearts of us all.
Our guests so enjoyed Katie in 2002 that we asked her to participate in our Celebration of Life event again in 2003. I would recommend Katie to any organization.
Sincerely,
Lisa J. Weber, Executive Director,
