What you don't have may actually be your greatest asset. This week we're Off Balance On Purpose, embracing constraints.
Fill in the blanks. If you only had more or better (blank), then you'd finally be able to (blank). For example, if you only had more time, more money, better tools, or the right people to help you, then you would finally be able to start, finish, win, succeed, be happy, or slow down and spend time with the people you love.
Actually, your limitations and constraints, the things you don't have, are incredibly valuable to you, in two specific ways: Clarifying what you want. And finding your own way.
If you had everything, you could, theoretically, have everything. Except you couldn't, because you can only be in one place at a time, eat one meal at a time, think a thought, or spend a day, hour or moment in one, specific way. The more you acquire the more you realize the limitations of your time, thought, and money. And you must reconcile that with your decisions and actions. What are you doing? Why does it matter? And what do you want?
The second gift of constraint is creativity. If you don't have the time, money, or resources to do it that way, you must find your own way. This tests your resolve while requiring you to combine, innovate, and adapt quickly. And that's the fun part. Get what you want, or create a short cut. It won't be perfect, so make it your version of messy. Let your intentions and passion take the driver's seat, and embrace this journey of discovery.
The greatest innovations and invention were born of limitation. The most inspiring people started with little, and realized they had what was necessary. And so do you. It's not about what you don't have. It's about who you are. Let your constraints elevate your clarity and your creativity, and in time you'll be so grateful for what you didn't have. Until next week, stay Off Balance On Purpose.
