- Self-Care, Nurturing, and Pleasure: A Doctor’s Prescription for Optimal Heart, Breast, and Lung Health
Pregnancy, birth, and breast- feeding are all physical metaphors for optimal nurturance, caring, and pleasure that contain enormous wisdom and guidance. Every woman, regardless of whether or not she’s ever had a child, has access to an innate inner blueprint of cellular wisdom for these functions. She can tap into this inner blueprint and read its instructions for creating optimal breast, heart, and lung health for herself - no matter her current starting point.
Take breast-feeding, for example, when a nursing mother feels safe and secure and is optimally nourished, her body produces enough high-quality milk to optimally nourish her child without depleting her own body. Her breast feeding is accompanied by increased circulation of blood in her breasts, heart, and lungs, and pleasurable sensations throughout her and her baby’s body, sensations that are accompanied by large amounts of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin is a bonding hormone -- it literally makes mother and baby feel safe, secure, calm, and loved while promoting optimal health in the entire body -- but particularly in the organs of the chest: the heart, breasts, and lungs.
The opposite is also true. When a woman is stressed out, worried, resentful, or overly tired, she has nothing to give to anyone else. She attempts to give from an empty cup, as it were. And this is inevitably associated with anger, despair, resentment, and sorrow -- emotions that result in high levels of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin. Over time, elevated levels of these hormones increase the risk for heart, lung, and breast disease. In this lecture, board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Christiane Northrup will present a medically sound step by step program to help every woman enhance her heart, breast, and lung health through regular doses of pleasure, optimal self-care, and optimal self-nourishment.
- The Healing Power of Pleasure and Prosperity
Study after study has demonstrated that our states of consciousness directly and powerfully affect every cell, organ, and biological function in our bodies. The biologic states that are created by pleasure, ecstasy, and a sense of reward are hard-wired into our brains and bodies long before birth. The desire to go after what we really want in life is part of our innate inner guidance system. We are pleasure-seeking, goal-oriented creatures by nature. In addition to our innermost desires, however, we are also herd creatures. Our sense of safety, security, and belonging is what wires in the health of our bones, blood, and immune systems. Quite simply, we need to know we’re not alone and that we belong to a group of like-minded individuals.
The major conflicts in intimate relationships very often arise around beliefs and behaviors around money, and power-- issues that affect the pelvic (second chakra) organs and low back.
Throughout our lives, each of us is called upon to learn how to effectively balance the dynamic tension between going after what we really want (our heartfelt desires) vs. doing what it takes to be accepted by others. This dynamic tension plays itself out in issues around money, sex, and power (e.g. “If you really loved me, you’d give me the money I need to pay off my credit card debt.”) Money, sex, and power issues affect the health of our second chakras (pelvic organs, lower bowel, and low back) and beliefs about these areas are handed down in families. The end result is endometrioisis, infertility, pelvic pain, fibroids, prostate problems, and so on. As an ob/gyn physician, I have spent over 20 years helping women and their mates become conscious of their second chakra beliefs and learn how to transform them.
Moving toward pleasure and avoiding unnecessary pain is part of creating vibrant health. This seminar will present practical, uplifting ways to uncover your second chakra programming, transform it, and in the process, experience more pleasure, prosperity, fulfillment, fun, and power in your life.
- Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom: Creating the Empowered Feminine
For the past 5000 years, the female body and everything having to do with it, have been seen as inferior to the male standard. For this reason, men and women both have been taught that the processes of the female body, such as menstruation, childbirth, and menopause are at best major inconveniences, and at worst, curses visited upon women because Eve ate the apple and thus brought evil to mankind.
But we have now entered an era characterized by the rise in the status of women and feminine values— as well as a growing global awareness of how gender abuse in all its many guises hurts all of us. Along with this rise in feminine consciousness has come the need to revise our thinking about the female body and its processes. Far from being an inherent source of pain and shame, we now know that a woman’s body and its processes are deeply connected to and affected by the cycles of nature as well as by our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. Making the connection between our bodies and our lives allows us to connect with empowered feminine energy - the Source of life and nurturance, caring and connection - all the qualities that make life worth living and which are also necessary for sustainable health and healing. This is the essence of the empowered feminine! When we learn how to fuel our lives from this Source, we can create vibrant health, joy, and healing. By coming home to our own bodies in this way, we heal not only ourselves and our lives, but also become a source of wisdom and joy that holds the potential to uplift everyone around us. This presentation offers participants of either gender a step by step plan for connecting with the empowered feminine within in order to create a more vibrant and healthy life. For millennia, the Earth has been seen as feminine — and many have pointed out that the fate of the Earth and that of women have much in common. With the rise of empowered feminine energy, there is no doubt that the healing of both is at hand.- Becoming an Exceptional Person...While Remaining Human: Ten Principles for Health and Happiness
In over 20 years of medical practice, I’ve observed ten principles for approaching medical care... or life in general... that can, when applied consciously, enhance one’s ability to heal or remain healthy, while also living a joyous and fruitful life. Although I originally articulated these as the “ten principals for becoming an exceptional doctor” when I was invited to address the graduating University of Vermont College of Medicine Class of 1997 at their commencement ceremony, I later realized that whether we are doctors or patients or both, we all must embrace our common humanity if we are to experience optimal health and healing. These ten principles form a road map for this adventure.
- Choosing Hope, Health, & Joy: The Leap of Faith that Heals Your World
The state of our outer world, moment to moment, is a direct reflection of our inner reality including our beliefs, thoughts, and emotions. By the law of attraction, we draw toward us that which most closely matches this inner reality on all levels— regardless of what we say we believe. The power to change our environments, both inner and outer, lies first in acknowledging how we keep re-creating our lives and bodies by our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions, and second, by choosing to access our inner wisdom to change our beliefs and emotions to those that support health, freedom, and joy for ourselves and for those around us.

- Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom: Trusting the Wisdom of Our Bodies
For the past 5000 years, the female body and everything having to do with it, have been seen as inferior to the male standard. For this reason, men and women both have been taught that the processes of the female body, such as menstruation, childbirth, and menopause are at best major inconveniences, and at worst, curses visited upon women because Eve ate the apple and thus brought evil to mankind.
But we have now entered an era characterized by the rise in the status of women — and a growing global awareness of how gender abuse in all its many guises hurts all of us. Along with this rise in feminine consciousness has come the need to revise our thinking about the female body and its processes. Far from being a source of pain and shame, women all over the world, along with many scientists, are discovering that a woman’s body is deeply connected to the cycles of the earth. When we learn to respect and consciously work with these cycles, we enter the realm of true wisdom. With this wisdom, we can improve not just our own health, but also come to a better understanding of our role on the planet. For millennia, the Earth has been seen as feminine — and many have pointed out that the fate of the Earth and that of women have much in common. There is no doubt that the healing of both is at hand.
- Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Understanding the Crucial Link between Mothers, Daughters, and Health
The mother-daughter bond, the strongest biologic bond there is, is at the headwaters of a woman's health since it sets the stage for how we think about and care for our bodies. This indelible bond is, arguably the most significant relationship in our lives since our physical bodies were formed in an environment created by our mother's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Our immune, endocrine, and nervous systems were wired within our mother's womb and their function throughout life reflects this beginning. This is why the famous Swiss psychoanalyst Alice Miller said, “The truth about our childhoods is stored up in our bodies.” Mother-Daughter Wisdom explores the potent biology of the mother-daughter bond and provides strategies for improving it (and your health) at any stage of life whether you have a daughter or not and even if you don’t know your mother or are estranged from her.
